Canterbury Cricket Trust
World-class indoor sports centre delivered on time and on budget.
Based on P&G + Margin tender, Naylor Love was engaged to build the new Sir Richard Hadlee Sports Centre in Hagley Park. The multi-use facility will predominantly be an indoor cricket training space for community use, with five retractable net lanes boasting generous 20-metre run-ups. It also includes changing rooms for the wider South Hagley Park sports fields, a 300 square metre mezzanine floor, and offices for the Canterbury Cricket Association.
This project involved the demolition of the former Horticultural Hall and construction of a new 1,500m2 building, largely on the same footprint. The structure is a portal frame with structural timber framing on two gable end walls and timber infill on the other walls. The envelope is a Rooflogic roof with double-skinned skylights, and the cladding is Espan Colorsteel tray.
The biggest challenge for this project was the tight programme, with the facility needed for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in February. Our estimating and project delivery teams worked collaboratively with the client, architect, and consultants throughout the project amid Covid-related disruptions and supply chain issues, identifying alternative materials, re-working the programme, and value engineering to fit the budget.
After many years of planning and fundraising, Canterbury Cricket is delighted with their world-class facility.
